Afternoon Coffee

By Maggie Jiang

His hands tremble with

quiet deliberation while

holding the milk carton

to dull the bitterness of

his afternoon coffee

so he can sit down and muse

about all the hands he has held

and lead and stroked and poked

he sits down with his coffee

but his hands tremble not under

the weight of the cup but

under the weight of life
